Pursuing Education and Certification—and Finding the Means to Pay for Them

​In June 2012, Katherine Rawl’s husband was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan while serving with the South Carolina National Guard. She was 30 years old, working full time as a benefits counselor for a state agency, and taking care of two young children. After her devastating loss, she was determined to take control of her education and career, with help from veterans benefits and SHRM certification.
