Part of choosing a career is to find a company culture that fits you. This is because you need the enabling environment to progress based on your career development strategies. You must choose a workplace that recognizes your personal values, a company that will recognize your workforce and a workplace that parades the best version of you.
Beyond Job description, here are four ways to find a company culture that would work for you.
Reading through a job description usually excites us and we say, ‘Hey! This is what I’d love to do‘. But that’s not all we should look out for. We need to dig deeper to know what the job description or company has to say about your career purpose and path. Well, these job responsibilities hinder or support my development? Take some time to examine if your routine would suffer because of the job- is the location too far? Will I blend naturally or do I need to let some things go?
You don’t need to take up a job because you want to be employed. Take some time to review what could motivate you at the workplace. Evaluate your daily activities there to ascertain if it’s going to provide the value you require. Observe how happy or miserable the current employees look. Check if the office working environment is an open space, cubicles or rooms. Find out how the current staff dress, is it how your want to be looking every day? These provide a picture of the company’s values and policies which you may want or dislike.
Also, you need to use the opportunity to ask certain questions during the interview. Strategically ask about the company’s management, how best to work with them, philosophy and leadership. If the interviewer sounds insincere or provides information that doesn’t represent your values, it’s a red flag. Find out if you were satisfied when you leave the office after the interview. Were you motivated or de-motivated?
It is normal to do this already even before applying for the opening. But you’ll gain more insights evaluating the kind of questions you were asked at the interview. Don’t just tell the interviewer what he or she wants to hear. Be real in your responses and answer every question based on what you have planned to achieve in reality.
You don’t have to think about how much time and resources you have spent to get the job. If you are convinced it doesn’t fit you, be prepared to turn it down and you shouldn’t be afraid. You can’t put in all the efforts to find a company culture of your choice only to give up because of an offer. There are more out there and remember that this has to do with a long-term development.
