The United States and China signed a historic trade agreement in January 2020, which included provisions on respecting intellectual property rights and enforcement against misappropriation of trade secrets and confidential business information. But many experts are skeptical about the agreement will be honored. The FBI has more than 1,000 intellectual property theft cases open involving individuals associated with China. Those thefts have cost the United States nearly $500 billion a year, experts say.
