Apple CEO Tim Cook recently disclosed a new detail about Apple work environment: the introduction of standing desk for all Apple employees.
“Everyone gets a standing desk,” Cook said in an interview with The Carlyle Group’s David Rubenstein.
“We have given all of our employees, 100%, standing desks. If you can stand for a while, then sit, and so on and so forth, it’s much better for your lifestyle”. He added. This is an all-new approach to the Apple staff welfare as Cook continuously cited doctors that say “sitting is the new cancer.”
The privilege to use a standing desk is only one of the numerous benefits Apple employees enjoy at the company’s new headquarters, Apple Park, which is estimated to have been built with a cost of over $5 billion.
About 4% of all global deaths have been linked to long sitting hours by American Journal of Preventive Medicine which opines that longer sitting hours is growing into a major contributory factor to mortality rates across the globe in a recent study. In other words, gains of life expectancy should be led by efforts to eliminate this risk factor for everyone working in an environment where duties are mainly discharged sitting down. Also, there’s need to curtail longer sedentary work life for a healthier workforce.
Apple paid great attention while furnishing the Apple Park, especially its interior decoration which prides top-quality furniture such as the very finely made desk chairs by Vitra with over a thousand dollars price tag in addition to a standing desk, for every employee.
The specific standing desk model Apple has delivered to its employees is still unknown as the company had declined response to a probe from Business Insider about the specific model of standing desk its employees use. But leaked interior photos published in The Wall Street Journal depict adjustable desks that can be raised and lowered using a button.
The desk itself is height-adjustable and went through multiple versions, mostly involving different configurations of the brackets that fix it to the wall: These includes the fiber for connectivity as well as electrical wires as dangling cables would not be befitting. Adjustment of the desk upwards or downwards is simply achieved through two buttons underneath the desk. Users can distinguish between the buttons by a feel as the convex button raises the table, while the concave button lowers it.
A key aim of Apple’s huge investment into this massive Apple Park is to enhance its ability to recruit and retain talented software developers and tech workers while also promoting a healthy workforce. Tim Cook and Apple apparently are happy with Apple Park. Cook also said that the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs “had the vision that the workplace should facilitate people working together,” with “common areas that people could work together and run into each other without planning on doing it.”
“And that the level of ideas and creativity and innovation that would come out of that would be phenomenal, and we’re seeing that.”
