You create an attractive resume and present it to a potential employer, but in the end, it gets rejected! Why?
Well, there are many reasons a resume gets rejected. Every candidate gives all of their effort in creating the best resume for a job, be it including the perfect details or their skills and capabilities. However, there are specific reasons that a resume gets rejected by an employer. Some of those reasons include:
More focus on background and experience
Too much information about the background and experience is irrelevant to the position. If you are a person who took a break in between and did a small stint in between to join a new office again, then it is better to omit the details of the short assignment that you were a part of. Part-time jobs that you did right out of college and volunteering can be eliminated, they are irrelevant. Instead, focus and mention the skills that you achieved from the part-time works. Also, you should omit the following:
If you feel that the above should be mentioned, then make short references than long details.
Missing out keyword phrases
Before a resume reaches an HR person, it is most likely to be scanned for specific keyword phrases. Many companies have scanning software that takes some of the workloads off from the staff. If the resume doesn’t have specific keywords, it will be immediately rejected. Customize the resumé for the job by including relevant associated keywords. You can add the keywords from the job listing itself.
Resume that doesn’t match the application materials
The resume should be in coordination with the cover letter and references provided. Often candidates give more importance on the resume and don’t give a care about the cover letter, and they send it as is. This will lead to a straightway rejection of the candidature. Always make sure you present everything well coordinated to the potential employer.
Inappropriate content on social media accounts
Often the reason for denial of candidature or the resume may not be the resume itself, and it can also be the references and the social media links you present. If there is a professional presence on social media, make sure you include information about your social media accounts on the resumé. If the account contains information that is viewed as offensive or controversial, there is a high probability of the resume getting rejected.
Failing to focus on what you can contribute
Never include information or remarks about pay, benefits, and advancement potential, leave those for the negotiations phase. A resumé should be all about what the candidate can offer an organization, the skills the person possesses, the experiences, and a bit of information about the current employer or previous employers.
Typos and poor editing
Typos and lousy editing are a big turn-off in a resume. Use advanced tools for creating free efficient resumes. Always proofread the resume before sending them to an employer. A second review may catch mistakes or awkward wording that was earlier missed.
Resumé formatting and content
The way a resumé looks and reads should be appropriate for the employer. If a person is going for a job where creativity and diversity are valued, the candidate should find ways to emphasize items in the resumé that show the relevance. In that case, the cover letter also provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the cultural fit for the organization.
