U.S. employers added 145,000 new jobs in December, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report, reflecting solid job gains. Unemployment held at 3.5 percent, a 50-year low.
With an average of 180,000 new jobs being added each month in 2019, job growth lagged behind the 2018 average but was in line with 2017. The labor market’s current pace of growth continues to absorb population growth and bring in sidelined workers, tightening slack.
