States reported that 207,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Sept. 30, an increase of 2,000 from last week’s revised level but still near the lowest level of unemployment claims since the beginning the year.
About 1.6 million workers continue to claim unemployment benefits, down from a high of 1.86 million in mid-April.
Data shows that jobseekers may be losing their sway over employers–but not by much. The unemployment rate unexpectedly rose in August to 3.8 percent, the highest it has been in 18 months. But job openings also increased in August, after falling for the three months prior.
On Oct. 6, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its Employment Situation report, detailing the number of jobs created in September. ADP reported yesterday that 85,000 jobs were created–a much lower number than expected.
