States reported that 220,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 3,000 from last week’s revised level. About 1.7 million workers continue to claim unemployment benefits, down from a high of 1.86 million in mid-April. The unemployment rate unexpectedly rose in August to 3.8 percent from 3.5 percent in July, the highest since February 2022. The increase is attributed to a significant rise in labor force participation.
