7 Tips to Guarantee Career Advancement

A wise one once said that if you are shrinking yourself to fit in the space you have outgrown, then it is time to move or replant yourself. The same goes for your work life. If you feel that you are stagnating and have outgrown your role, you need to rethink how to get ahead in your present role, move to another place, or just strike out on your own.

Try to evaluate why you feel constricted in your present position. As human beings, we resist change and wallow in safe spaces. Are you too comfortable in your job and present position and do not want to upset the cart?

Here are a few tips on moving forward in your career and from your comfortable present perch.

Define your success

Everyone has a different definition of success. Some want to reach the VP level in 5 years, others want to become directors in the company, and some want to learn and move on. Think about what you want your career to look like in the future. What you’re striving for now, maybe 5 or 10 years down the line can be different. Thinking long-term will help you define your version of success.

Establish goals and timelines

Establishing a specific goal to be reached at a particular time gives you a clear path to traverse. Without goals, a timeline is simply a schedule. Break the big plan into achievable goals. Consider the steps you need to take to reach the next level in your career.

Do you need to upskill? Do you need to network or move laterally within the organization?

Start Networking

It is essential to know the people in your business. Socialize professionally. Join organizations, present papers or make presentations. Follow the latest innovation in your space.

Talks to your peers, mentors, and managers about advancement opportunities in your space. The more information you gather, the better it is for you.

Invest in Your Abilities as an Employee

Take time to develop the qualities valued at your workplace. Improve your “soft skills,” such as communication and writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

Learn from observing your peers and leaders in the group. See how they deal with conflicts and solve problems—their way of communicating.

Develop Your Leadership Skills

If you show some abilities at your workplace and are ready to take responsibility for your work, employers will definitely throw opportunities for advancement. Be it work trips or career-enhancing short courses. Embrace these opportunities. Employers promote or grant new career opportunities to workers who have shown they can handle being a leader because the higher you move up in an organization, the more people you will likely have to oversee.

Develop good life and work habits

It is said successful professionals know how to run a meeting. Use consistent systems, show up and own up no matter what. If organization doesn’t come naturally to you, then acquire the skills. Personal organization is a toolkit you can take with you wherever you go.

Strive for More

New responsibilities, new skills, and new goals. Don’t get comfortable when you learn your way around a new job. Acquire more knowledge to move forward and have a clear path to whichever top you want to scale. When the next big opportunity comes up, you’re not only qualified, but you present yourself as the ideal candidate.
