It’s important to watch out for the signs of employee disengagement so that actions can be taken to reverse the situation. Mentioned in this post are the most common and clear signs of disengaged employees.
Engaged employees are the most important assets of a company. Engaged and employees see their company’s mission as their own. They adopt their company’s values and principles as their own. Disengaged employees have all of these qualities absent in their work ethics. Since their values, missions, and principles do not match with that of their company’s, they don’t put any extra efforts towards their organization’s success.
Sluggishness, absenteeism, low productivity – are the traits of a disengaged and unmotivated employee. And once such traits surface, it can be very difficult or nearly impossible to reverse the situation and negatively affect employee retention.
Hence, it’s advised that managers combat the problem as soon as the signs become apparent. Here is a roundup of the most common signs of employee disengagement.
Disengaged employees are withdrawn. Since they lack the passion towards their work, they tend to keep their association with their company and its people limited to the work responsibilities that are required out of them. They don’t participate in non-necessary conversations or activities. Building relations – building healthy and valuable relations with co-worker or superiors, is not a priority for disengaged employees.
Their lack of participation in non-work activities and lack of interest in working with co-workers on new initiatives, is one of the most observable signs of depleting employee engagement. Silence from their end can be sometimes perceived as introvertedness or shyness, but if this is a newly formed quality or if they don’t express enthusiasm or excitement for any important task or company victories, there is an engagement problem.
A clear sign of depleting employee engagement is declining efficiency. Employees who have been highly productive and efficient at one point start missing deadlines and using shortcuts to finish work, or conduct work halfheartedly – all of which manifests into poor efficiency. Such an employee might be tardy, may take breaks more often than required or may not show up at work more often. When there is a change in an employee’s behavior pattern – he/she may become indifferent to feedback altogether, then it’s a clear sign of employee disengagement.
Absenteesim is perhaps, one of the most clear warning signs of employee disengagement. Engaged employees find a way to be at work while disengaged employees find a way to be away from work. While there may be various reasons for an employee being absent, a disproportionate increase in absent days, if not backed by a valid reason, is the sign of a disengaged employee.
Employees have their days of being disgruntled with something or someone. But a constant lack of apathy or rudeness as in the in case of severe disengagement, is one of the most pronounced signs of employee disengagement. An employee can be curt with co-workers or clients either because he isn’t bothered about the repercussions or because he had been keeping his feelings capped for a long time. While the former is a sign of employee disengagement, the latter points out something else. The employee might feel that he is not heard or he doesn’t have the space to express his views freely. Bottling up views or feeling ignored also leads to disengagement beyond repair.
