Apple has reached a tentative union contract with its first unionized store in Towson, Maryland, but the contract is still pending full approval from members. Similar to other major tech players in the country, the iPhone maker had managed to hold off union activities for quite a while until the Apple Maryland union came to be in 2022. There have been no deals struck between the company and its workers so far, but the recent Apple labor agreement may finally turn things around for workers.
Apple has not commented publicly on the deal but The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, the union that backs the Maryland members, announced that they were close to securing the deal.
From what we know about the Apple Maryland store deal, the union has a three-year agreement with the company for an average 10 percent increase in pay along with improvements to work-life balance and other benefits for the store workers. According to CNN, this also includes job protections such as a guarantee of a severance package if employees are ever laid off, along with limits on contract employees. Apple is generally good about avoiding layoffs but even the iPhone maker had to turn to job cuts earlier this year to better orient their internal projects.
The exact details of the Apple Union contract remain unclear but we may know more once the deal is approved. A vote will be held on August 6, where the 85 unionized members will get to have their say on whether the contract sufficiently meets their expectations or not. The two-year wait to reach a deal sounds extensive, but it is becoming increasingly common to see union efforts succeed with forming the group but matters eventually coming to a standstill after negotiations with the company don’t proceed further. The Communications Workers of America have also formed a union at an Apple store in Oklahoma City, but no contract has been formalized there either.
Back in May, after failing to see any changes, the Apple Maryland union announced their decision to go on strike against the working conditions at the company. They wanted changes in the unpredictable scheduling and were also hoping to see wages that aligned with the cost of living in the state, according to The Hill. The workers claimed that conversations with Apple had not yielded “satisfactory outcomes” and this final push could have been the factor that led to the current Apple union contract. If the contract is accepted, it will be Apple’s first union deal in the country.
Across the country, and even globally, unionization efforts have been drawing a lot of attention. Starbucks is in the midst of union negotiations and Samsung union workers in South Korea are on an indefinite strike against the company.
Pharmacists at select CVS stores have succeeded in their efforts to unionize, while in the UK, GMB lost a union vote by a narrow margin in its efforts to establish a union at Amazon. Tesla workers in Sweden have been on an extended strike against the working conditions at the company, but they don’t appear to be any closer to finding a resolution.
Amidst all this, the Apple union contract could be a big step for workers within the company and a motivator for other employees across other organizations that are trying to unionize.
