What Makes a Bad Boss

What makes a bad boss? It’s a question that many of us have asked ourselves at some point, and it’s one we’ve all had to answer for ourselves. The truth is that there are plenty of good bosses out there—but there are also plenty of bad ones.

If you’ve ever had a bad boss, or worse—a boss who was just plain mean to you—you know what it’s like to try and go to work when someone is making your life miserable. You can’t focus on anything else but the fact that they are being mean to you, and how much you hate it.

Classics Signs and Traits of Toxic Bosses

Nothing brightens up a toxic workplace like an inadequate boss.

So what is it that makes a bad boss? And how can you tell if you’re dealing with a bad boss? In this article, we’ll explore the qualities of the worst bosses on the planet. We’ll talk about what makes a bad boss, and why you should never be one of them.

Who is a bad boss?

Bad bosses are the ones who treat their employees like they’re disposable and don’t care about them as people. They’re also the ones who make it hard for their employees to do their jobs because they don’t give them any slack. They also make it hard on everyone else around them, because they are draining the office of morale.

Bad bosses can come in all shapes and sizes—and they can be skilled or unskilled, young or old, short-tempered or laid-back. But when it comes down to it, bad bosses are bad because they treat people poorly and don’t care about them as people.

Bad bosses cause a lot of stress in the workplace. Not only do they make you feel like you’re not capable of doing your job, but they can also make your coworkers feel bad about themselves.

What are the characteristics of a bad boss?

What makes a bad boss? Here are some of the most common signs:

Lack of Communication

One characteristic of a bad boss is that they don’t listen to your input—or give theirs. Bad bosses make their employees feel like they’re speaking in an echo chamber, where they say exactly what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. They don’t take your suggestions seriously or try them out on other people before making decisions. They don’t ask their team members for feedback or advice (even when it seems like it would be appreciated).

Favoritism

Another trait of bad bosses is that they employees unfairly or inconsistently based on gender or race/ethnicity/disability status/sexual orientation, etc. Bad bosses often treat people differently based on their identity or appearance—or how much money they make—and this can make everyone less likely to want to work for them because nobody wants to feel like an object instead of a human being. They give out unfair promotions or pay raises.

Micromanagement

The next trait that makes a bad boss is micromanagement. Micromanaging bosses can not let their employees grow. They prefer to do it all and leave no space for their employees to learn. It’s like stopping a baby from crawling. Micromanaging bosses are all over the place most of the time. It’s unhealthy to be working for a bad boss.

Aggressive

The next traits of bad bosses are quick to anger and abusive ones. They make it so hard to work peacefully because employees will always be scared to get on their bad sides. Most of these bosses never appreciate the work done by their employees, but go ahead to complain and lay abuse on each of them. This makes working for a bad boss uncomfortable to bear.

Takes All the Glory

You know we just spoke about aggressive bosses as one of the traits of what makes a bad boss. How about a boss that appreciates an employee’s work and takes all the glory at the end of the day? This is what makes a bad manager and it is a painful experience, especially when the higher-ups are involved.

Other characteristics of a bad boss include:

  • Manipulative
  • Assaults
  • Gossiping
  • Hardly Available
  • Avoids Delegation

Understanding the traits of what makes a bad boss will help employees to know what scenarios they find themselves in and find a way out of it.
