Tip-Sharing Blocked in Government Spending Bill

A measure to prohibit employers from requiring wait staff to share their tips with back-of-the-restaurant workers, such as cooks and dishwashers, was approved by Congress in March 2018 as part of a federal spending bill. Labor advocates hailed the move but restaurant owners had favored the greater flexibility they would have had under a now-blocked proposed rule from the Department of Labor.
