THE HR DIGEST Survival Guide: Celebrating 4/20 at Work

April 20 (or 4/20) is the day when thousands of people gather around the country to celebrate a drug that still remains illegal in most parts of the country: Marijuana. It used to be a celebration held with a level of surreptitiousness, the rapidly expanding legalization of marijuana means it is no longer a taboo it once was. While there are companies offering tours and arranging visits to commercial marijuana growing operations on this day, there are also some planning a rather perilous annual event – the office 4/20 party!

Whether this is your first 4/20 party at work, or you’re learning from past mistakes, here is a survival guide of Do’s and Don’ts to help you ensure your job remains safe.

What to do

Attend

Okay, so maybe spending an entire evening with people you see every day isn’t your idea of fun, but making an appearance shows you’re a team player. The 4/20 party at work gives you a chance to let your hair down and celebrate the successes and stresses of the previous four months.

Interact

This is the second best opportunity you will have all year to mingle with all members of staff. Use this as an opportunity to introduce yourself to senior members and make a good impression by remembering names, maintaining eye contact and shaking hands. Don’t hog all the attention, because it may result in you preventing others from joining in the conversation with the senior management.

The office 4/20 party is slowly becoming a feature of the modern workplace.

What not to do

Smoke too much

This is a little too obvious, but the most important rule to remember. Enjoy at the 4/20 party at work, but remember you’re still accountable and under the scrutiny of the people you work with and your superiors. Use this as an opportunity to present yourself in the best possible light by showing you can have fun while remaining in control. Avoid mixing drinks.

Social media

Don’t sit in a corner and act antisocial while feverishly updating your social media feeds. Most people at the office 4/20 party will want to let loose rather than being papped. This could also led to serious consequences if the post later goes viral, particularly if senior management is involved.

Talk about work

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Most people want to forget about workplace stresses and let loose when they’re off duty. Try not to engage coworkers in conversations about sales figures, projections and client behavior. While you’re at it, also refrain from gossiping at work. It will only show you in a bad light and you never know who’s standing behind you.
