There has been an unending debate about the plus points of making renewable energy the primary source of energy for mankind. The factor which supports renewable energy in this debate is the fact that it is sustainable. It causes almost negligible harm to the environment in comparison to the fossil fuels. But now another aspect has come up which make renewable energy a preferable energy source. The latest report by the U.S. Department of Energy states that solar power offers better employment opportunities that all the fossil fuel departments combined. This report was based on the Sierra Club analysis which provided job data. Jobs in solar power outnumber fossil fuel jobs by more than 2.5 to 1.

These statistics are quite surprising especially in the country of U.S. This is because newly elected President Donald Trump had promised to lay stress on the progress in the sectors of coal and gas by 5 to 1. Despite this, almost all the states in the nation excluding nine of them have more jobs in clean energy than fossil fuels. This report also focuses on the fact that the jobs in solar power are more than the jobs in gas, traditional coal, and oil combined. This is a clear indication of the significant increase in job opportunities in clean energy.

Details about how solar power has better employment opportunities

This U.S. Department of Energy report reveals that solar power holds the largest proportion of employers in the Electric Power Generation Sector. Wind energy follows in the third position for better employment opportunities. Jobs in the coal industries have reduced drastically in the past 10 years. The report clearly states that solar power has the largest share of workers due to the increase in the construction of the new solar generation capacity.

In the year 2015-2016, solar power hired 374,000 people which made up 43 percent of its workforce. On the other hand, traditional fossil fuels employed 187,117 workers which make up only 22 percent of its workforce. This shows that the gap between the two sectors is growing constantly. The net generation from coal has decreased by 53 percent from 2006 to September 2016. In 2015 itself, employment in solar power has increased by 25 percent. This happened as it added 73,000 new jobs to the country’s economy. This specifically portrays that renewable energy is not only beneficial for the environment but also provides better employment opportunities for humans.
