Jobless Claims Tick Up Slightly

States reported that 230,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Jan. 8, an increase of 23,000 from last week’s revised level. The total number of workers continuing to claim unemployment benefits, at 1.5 million, has fallen well under its pre-pandemic average of 1.7 million.
