Jobless Claims Hold at Pre-Pandemic Level

Both first-time and continuing unemployment claims are now at or below the level they were generally at before the pandemic-related spike in 2020. States reported that 207,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Jan. 1. The total number of workers continuing to claim unemployment benefits has finally returned to its pre-pandemic average of 1.7 million.
